PRODUCT INFO
The Ouija (Wee-Jee), also known as a Spirit Board or Talking Board, is a flat board marked with the letters of the alphabet, the numbers 0–9, the words "Yes", "No", occasionally "Hello" and "Goodbye", along with various symbols and graphics. It uses a planchette (small heart-shaped piece of wood or plastic) as a movable indicator to spell out messages during a séance. Participants place their fingers on the planchette, and it is moved about the board to spell out words.
In popular culture (all the rage in the 1920s), these boards are considered to be a "Spiritual Gateway" used to contact the dead; however, the only evidence for this is the various accounts of users--nothing has been scientifically proven. Decide for yourself ~ are you willing to give it a try?
Things You'll Need
- One or two friends (Never be alone while using the Ouija board)
- White Candles or a dim light
- Burning White-sage or incense (optional)
How to Use a Ouija Board
Sit opposite your partner, with the board between you and your fingers lightly touching the message indicator (planchette). One of you asks a question-now concentrate very hard on the matter at hand-and wait for the indicator to move and begin to reveal the answer through the message window. If nothing happens at first, try asking another question. Allow one to five minutes for an answer to come. Will it tell you Yes-or No? Will it give you a Number-or Spell out an answer? For decades, players have brought their questions to the Ouija board…
Does using a Ouija release powerful demons from some sort of otherworldly lock hold? Allow humans to access a spiritual realm? Or just exemplify the "ideomotor response," a psychological phenomenon through which our subconscious brain drives our fingers? Many questions...so few answers... Sticking to the linguistic realm, we can tell you that what's happening when you use a Ouija is called "automatic writing," and that marketers of the original boards claimed the term Ouija itself derived from an ancient Egyptian word for "good luck," though any casual observer can see that the word was formed from combining the words for "Yes" in French and German ("oui" + "ja"), tying into the "Yes" and "No" that appear on the board itself. A note on pronunciation: Either "wee-gee" or "wee-ja" is acceptable.
